Hematite is the most important iron ore. It is a dense mineral with a metallic luster and steel-gray color. The word hema is the Greek word for blood. Hematite leaves a reddish-brown mark in the streak test commonly used to identify minerals. It is used as a pigment and as a polishing powder. Great for science projects or classroom collection. Each piece is irregularly shaped and is between 0.5 and 1 inch in size. Recommended for ages 7 and older.
