Agate Bookends - Violet Feature
Agate is a variety of crystal that is generally characterized by its brightness of color and fineness of grain. Found in various types of rock, they are most known to be found in volcanic rocks. Agate forms when gas bubbles trapped in cooling lava become filled with alkali and silica-bearing waters, which then consolidate into a gel-like substance. The alkali reacts with the iron in the surrounding lava, and bands of the resulting iron hydroxide are created in the gel. The bands are left intact after the gel loses water and solidifies. This is why many agates, when cut into cross-sections, revealing amazing stripes and designs. Resistant to acids, they have often been used to make mortars and pestles to crush chemicals.
